KuCoin or Gate

Both live off coins the top three do not list. What separates them from each other.

…

One niche, two approaches

KuCoin and Gate both exist because of coins Binance does not carry. But KuCoin screens them more strictly and bets on trader tooling, while Gate bets on breadth and transparency.

What KuCoin offers

The main difference is built-in trading bots. Grid and averaging bots are configured directly in the interface with no code: pick a pair, set a range and a number of levels.

Understanding them is mandatory: a grid bot earns on oscillation inside its range and loses when price leaves it. It is a sideways-market tool.

The KCS token discounts fees and pays a share of part of the venue's fee income — uncommon among exchange tokens.

What Gate offers

Longevity and transparency. Gate has run since 2013 — in an industry where venues close every year, twelve continuous years is an argument in itself.

Gate was among the first to publish Merkle-tree proof of reserves on a schedule: any user can verify their balance is counted in the exchange's liabilities and that those are covered by assets. Understand the limits — it does not reveal off-balance-sheet obligations — but publishing it voluntarily says something about the venue's attitude. KuCoin does not.

On coin count Gate is usually wider.

Neither has a simple history

KuCoin: around 280 million dollars taken from hot wallets in September 2020, covered by the exchange, and a guilty plea before US authorities in January 2025 with a payment of roughly 297 million and a two-year exit from the US market.

Gate: a 2015 episode when the venue, then trading as Bter, lost a large sum in bitcoin to a hack. Ten years have passed and the exchange changed its name and its approach to custody.

The shared risk

A wide listing always means dead pairs turning over a few thousand dollars, where one order moves the price tens of percent. The rule is identical for both: check volume and book depth before price.

Who each suits

KuCoin — if you want altcoins and built-in bots without writing code.

Gate — if a venue's longevity and openness about reserves matter, and you want the listing wider still.

Frequently asked

Which lists more coins?
Usually Gate, though the lead shifts. The current pair count is in the table above and updates itself.
What is proof of reserves?
A Merkle-tree procedure letting you verify your balance is counted in the exchange's liabilities and that those are covered by assets. It does not reveal off-balance-sheet obligations.
How reliable are KuCoin's bots?
Technically predictable. The risk is the strategy: a grid bot loses when price leaves the range you set.
Which is more reliable?
Gate has the longer history and publishes reserves regularly. KuCoin had a major hack in 2020 but covered the loss. On both, keep only what you trade with.
