In short: the difference
What OKX is: an ecosystem with its own set of services. On the market since 2017, jurisdiction: Seychelles, its own OKB token.
What Kraken is: a regulated venue. On the market since 2011, jurisdiction: San Francisco, USA.
What OKX gives you
The regulated venue wins on money, OKX on everything else: One of the few venues with a full derivatives suite: spot, perpetual and dated futures, options. Plus P2P, savings and staking, coin launches on Jumpstart, copy trading, bots and its own Web3 wallet with access to decentralised exchanges. It runs its own X Layer network, where USDT withdrawals are free.
Strong sides: free withdrawals on its own X Layer network, a full derivatives suite, a built-in Web3 wallet.
What Kraken gives you
Compared with an ecosystem, Kraken leans on its own strengths: The oldest venue we cover, running since 2011 under US regulation. Its distinction is real money: around seven hundred dollar pairs and five hundred and forty-six euro pairs, more than anyone here. There is spot, perpetual futures with hourly funding, staking and institutional services. Kraken is how we compute the live dollar rate in our stablecoin section.
Strong sides: 546 euro pairs and around seven hundred dollar ones, age and regulation, hourly funding.
What decides it
- Age. Kraken has run since 2011, OKX since 2017 — a gap of 6 years. It guarantees nothing on its own, but the older venue has been through more market cycles.
- Jurisdiction. OKX sits in Seychelles, Kraken in San Francisco, USA. It shapes both the checks you pass and what the venue has to disclose.
- Native token. OKB on OKX cuts fees and opens launches; Kraken has no such lever.
- Strengths side by side. OKX: free withdrawals on its own X Layer network, a full derivatives suite, a built-in Web3 wallet; Kraken: 546 euro pairs and around seven hundred dollar ones, age and regulation, hourly funding.
- Which job. OKX is for anyone who needs options and access to decentralised markets from one window, while Kraken is for settling in real dollars and euro rather than stablecoins.
- Worth remembering. OKX: the interface is dense: a newcomer needs time to settle in. Kraken: entry-level fees run higher than neighbours — it pays off at larger volumes.
Which one fits you
OKX — for anyone who needs options and access to decentralised markets from one window.
Kraken — for settling in real dollars and euro rather than stablecoins.
What people ask most
OKX: What is the separate European domain? Users in the European Economic Area are served by a separate legal entity on its own domain. Accounts and API keys do not carry across.
OKX: How does OKX differ from Binance? Books are nearly as deep, trading pairs are often more numerous, and the app contains a non-custodial wallet with a DEX aggregator — a combination Binance does not offer.
Kraken: What makes Kraken useful for stablecoins? It has genuine USD pairs, which is how we compute the live dollar rate. Without that anchor, USDT’s deviation would be measured against USDT itself.
Kraken: Does Kraken have P2P? No. Fiat comes in and out by bank transfer; there is no merchant-ad marketplace.
Kraken: Why does Kraken show so few pairs in your spot arbitrage? Because we take only USDT pairs, and Kraken has fewer than fifty: nearly everything is quoted in real dollars. Mixing USD pairs with other venues’ USDT pairs would present USDT’s deviation as arbitrage.
Both at once
Keeping both costs less than it seems: signing up is free, and a choice of two quotes usually beats one. Deposits and withdrawals go through the regulated venue, trading and yield through the ecosystem. A stablecoin travels between them on a cheap network.
Live numbers
The figures above do not come from marketing pages: we compute them from the same market snapshots as the rest of the site. OKX and Kraken can be compared on facts rather than promises.
What the numbers say
The spot lists differ by 9× — 406 USDT pairs on OKX, 45 on the other side. The futures list runs longer on OKX: 478, against 282. Only OKX gives a measurable USDT withdrawal: 0.0037 over ARBITRUM. P2P advertisements reach us from OKX alone: 17 currencies.
